Carl Yonder

Carl Yonder is a self-taught visionary surrealist whose artistic journey spans over two decades. Based in Germantown, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C., Yonder’s art reflects a life shaped by movement, introspection, and a deep connection to storytelling. As a military brat, he grew up traveling across the country and around the world. Amidst the constant relocating, his parents and his artwork were the enduring constants in his life, providing stability and inspiring his creative pursuits.

Guided by Transcendental Meditation and influenced by his global experiences, Yonder’s work delves into the subconscious, inviting viewers to transcend conventional storytelling. His art is a dynamic tapestry of color and abstraction, offering a space for viewers to interpret and craft their own narratives. Each piece is a personal journey and an open-ended invitation to introspection and imagination.

Yonder’s passion for creating and exhibiting has led to a flourishing career. He has exhibited extensively in the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond, earning recognition such as the Curator’s Choice Award at the Greenpoint Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, in December 2020. His work has been showcased in notable exhibitions, including with the I Like Your Work podcast, the Packard Group National Exhibition, Virginia's Torpedo Factory Art Gallery, and the Maritime Arts Museum in Solomons, Maryland.

In addition to group exhibitions, Yonder has hosted three solo exhibitions: Montgomery County, Maryland (2018), Brooklyn, New York (2021), and Washington County, Maryland (2024). His current solo show, Caravan, is on display at Gallery Blue Door in Baltimore, Maryland, through January 2025. In early fall of 2024, he published The Storyteller, a comprehensive book capturing his work over the past several years.

Through his art, Carl Yonder seeks to empower viewers to become storytellers in their own right. His work is a celebration of imagination and boundless possibility, offering a visual experience that resonates deeply, inviting all who engage with it to explore their own emotional landscapes.
